Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance wins Actualidad Económica award

1 June 2010

Man's unique collaboration with Oxford University recognised as one of the best '100 ideas of the year'

The Oxford Man Institute of Quantitative Finance was recognised yesterday as one of the 100 best ideas of the year by Spanish financial magazine ‘Actualidad Económica' at an awards ceremony in Madrid. It was one of five winners from the financial sector.

In 2007, Man Group, the largest listed hedge fund in the world, agreed to provide Oxford University with the cornerstone funding for an academic institute dedicated to quantitative finance. The arrangement entails Oxford's leading academics being co-located in the same purpose designed premises as researchers from AHL, one of the world's largest managed futures manager and a division of Man.

Oxford's academics pursue curiosity driven research independent of Man, while AHL's researchers pursue their own commercially driven research. The benefits for Man and AHL are that the arrangement allows AHL researchers early access to cutting edge ideas in finance from their interaction with Oxford's academics, and enhances recruitment from one of the world's leading Universities.

The first two years of the collaboration have been so successful that the two groups have moved into expanded premises at Eagle House in the Oxford suburb of Jericho.

This year AHL's 75 researchers in Oxford, London and Hong Kong will also introduce a number of exciting new refinements to their quantitative trading models, demonstrating concrete results from Man's substantial ongoing investment in AHL's research effort.

In explaining their rationale for choosing the Oxford-Man Institute, Actualidad Económica highlighted the unique collaboration between complementary academic and commercial research in the areas of quantitative finance and alternative investments.

"We have been gratified by the fact that our collaboration with Oxford University has generated worldwide attention," said Dr. Anthony Ledford, Chief Scientist of AHL. "As far as we know, there is no other arrangement like this between a finance company and one of the world's leading universities. We are, of course, very proud to be selected as one of the best 100 ideas by Spain's Actualidad Económica."
