Introduction

Interview with Bart Turtelboom, Co-Head of Emerging Markets, GLG

What are emerging markets?

Emerging markets are the financial markets of countries that are in the process of rapid growth and industrialisation.

‘‘Emerging markets have potential growth and investment opportunities that may not exist within developed markets.’’

The largest, fastest-growing emerging markets are Brazil, Russia, India and China ('BRIC'). Over the past decade, BRIC have contributed over a third of the world’s GDP growth1.

Why consider investing in emerging markets?

Emerging markets have attractive characteristics including:

  • Growth potential
Leading authorities, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, have forecast a huge transition in global economic power in the coming decades, away from developed and into emerging markets.
  • More sustainable debt levels
A large number of emerging market countries currently enjoy healthy levels of debt, low budget deficits and strong foreign exchange reserves.
  • Relatively untapped source
The level of research and information flow in emerging markets is generally thought to be inferior to that of developed markets. This means that opportunities can remain relatively untapped. However, for those with detailed knowledge of the market, the rewards can be significant.

The co-heads of the team are Karim Abdel-Motaal and Bart Turtelboom who each have over 15 years of experience in emerging markets.
